Networking tips
Whatever position you hold, whatever your profession, whatever your age, interacting with people is the key to moving forward and getting what you want. However, some methods are more effective than others.
Networking is an overused word. It’s teetering on the brink of being passé; something to be avoided at all costs. But the practice that the word represents is absolutely essential for advancing in today’s world. Much as many of us wish it were otherwise, it’s all about who you know. Which means, whatever the word you use, good networking is important. Emphasis on the “good”.
To get some golden tips we went to someone who knows what they’re talking about. Andy Hamilton is the CEO of The Icehouse business incubator. Lots of people try to talk to him every day. So, in his opinion, what makes someone stand out?
1. Networking is a way of life. It’s not something you only do on Friday nights.
2. If you are generous and thoughtful with networks – ie. doing something for others – most will invariably do the same for you.
3. Pattern matching is an art. Connecting the dots in network points can create real value, and it takes practice.
4. Six degrees of separation runs true in networking.
5. Curiosity killed the act. Being curious and interested in people will lead to interesting information you can leverage.
6. It’s easy to meet anyone in this world if you really want to make it happen.
7. Collect cards voraciously. Categorise them in a database and get them online.
8. Social media is a tidal wave in networking. If you are not in it, you are a mug.
9. Planning your network is for some, and not for others. Either way, just do what fits your personality.
10. You don’t network with your mates – they love you for who you are, not some tosspot!
So listen to one who knows. Get out there and “network” your little hearts out.
